Why do you like Taylor Swift? Just out of curiosity. I love her music but lately I've been noticing that she doesn't always send out a positive, accepting message to her fans (i.e. I've seen gay slurs, shaming women for drinking, perpetuating the stereotype that women need a Big Strong Man). Love your blog, by the way!

Because I love fun pop music. I used to make fun of her so much, because it’s easy. There are a thousand reasons to tear someone down. But, you know, my dear friend Adam taught me many things when we were together; one of the most important being that it’s damn hard to write a good pop song. That making fun of things just because you don’t like them is pointless. Teenagers are so harsh - they will hate each other without question because of different musical tastes - but it’s important to realize that people like different things and that’s okay! It’s a phase I grew out of only in the last few years.

I could name any band, musician, artist, writer, etc on tumblr and SOMEONE would find it problematic. Everything’s problematic. That attitude gets pretty tiring. I don’t agree with the messages in every song, but I like singing along to most of ‘em all the same.

I like what I like, and I really like Taylor Swift. I like Paul Simon and Jay Z and The Mountain Goats and Katy Perry and M83 and Ani Difranco and Dolly Parton, too.

I am going to have so much fun at that concert.
